So there I was, standing outside the Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, WI, having just enjoyed a great tour and some of the best beer I’ve had in a while, when my friend Dave says, “Lets go to the Comet Cafe.”

My girlfriend and I had flown out to WI for a short weekend trip to attend a wedding and catch up with some old friends. I’m always game for a new gastronomic experience, so I said, “Lets do it.”

We arrived, took our seats, and looked at the menu. Lots of bacon, in almost everything. As the waitress took our orders, she mentioned, The Akimbo–an item not on the menu. I asked what it was. “It’s that burger that was on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” she says. “I’ll have that,” was my prompt response.

I learned that the Akimbo is a cheeseburger with bacon, a fried egg, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomatoe, mushrooms, onion rings, and jalapeno relish, all stuffed between two grilled cheese sandwiches. When it arrived, I was a little intimidated.

This was going to be messy. I unhinged my jaw and dug in. What surprised me most is that it actually tasted good. The burger was cooked perfectly and the sauce was the perfect accompaniment. Sure, I may have had Akimbo guts smeared up to my elbows, but hey, I was living in the moment. Isn’t that what they life’s all about?

In the end, The Akimbo won. I couldn’t get it all down. Here’s a shot of the aftermath:
